January 2 - 29
Featured in The Philadelphia Inquirer
Please join us on Friday, January 2, 2009 from 5-9 PM with Laurence Salzmann “Every land is full of Thee and every sea” Art exhibition at Old City Jewish Art Center (OCJAC) located at 119 North 3rd Street in Old City Philadelphia.
This exhibition shows the moving account of Laurence Salzmann’s Journey Through the History of Jewish Lives: Romania, Jerusalem, Turkey (1974-89).
Laurence’s approach to his work was to develop a comfortable connection with his subjects so that while they spoke in their native languages and continued their activities, he went about his work, unobtrusively adjusting his cameras and his lights. The images he captured reveal the close connections the subjects felt not only with each other but with the photographer.
The images in this exhibit are from three phases of Laurence Salzmann’s long-term project about Jewish life in diverse places and cultures. The earliest were taken in Romania (1974-76), the next in Jerusalem (1976-77) and the last in Turkey (1984-89). Each project was initiated by Laurence and supported by several organizations as well as by private funds.
On Sunday, January 18, 2009, please join us from 2-4 PM for “Meet the Artist Reception”. Two films will be featured to accompany the exhibition. They are; Song of Radauti and Turkey's Sephardim: 500 Years. Light refreshments offered.
Laurence Salzmann’s “Every land is full of Thee and every sea” Art exhibition will run from January 2-29, 2009. The gallery hours are 1-6 PM Monday – Thursday (excluding religious holidays).
